Mr. Morris, who was speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’ at the agency’s Montego Bay Regional Office on February 20, said health officials continue to remind the public of the dangers of swimming or wading in water which has resulted from flooding, or eating foods that might have been contaminated with animal urine.“We are also advising parents to look out for their children who we all know are prone to going into whatever water they see around them, all in the name of fun. Food, too, must be covered and protected from contamination, which again is dangerous for unsuspecting youngsters as well as adults. If you see any food item that looks suspect, throw it away as it could easily be contaminated,” he warned.Mr. Morris said they have been seeing an increase in the notifications for leptospirosis across the parish. “It is always on our radar, so we are looking at how best we can reach persons to reduce these notifications. Currently, we are looking at education as one of the better means of reaching persons, in addition to implementing a rodent-control programme in the township of Savanna-la-Mar,” he noted. He emphasised that the rodent control programme has to be a collaborative effort between commercial entities, stakeholders, the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation and other agencies, adding that “the health department cannot, by itself, financially sustain such a programme”.Mr. Morris said leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that could lead to possible fatal infection of the kidney, liver, brain, lung or heart. He said while it cannot be spread from human to human, it can be contracted through exposure to the urine or body fluid of infected animals.Meanwhile, Veterinary Public Health Inspector, Jodi-Ann Harris, said that leptospirosis can be fatal if it is incorrectly diagnosed or not detected and treated “very quickly”. Ms. Harris stressed that a big part of the problem is that the symptoms of leptospirosis are similar to other illnesses, notably the flu, and which can oftentimes go untreated. She is appealing to Jamaicans to visit the nearest hospital or health centre and get tested if they experience any such symptoms.“If you are experiencing high fever, severe headache, chills, muscle aches, vomiting, jaundice, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and rash, go and see the doctor right away,” she implored.“Parents are also being advised that if any of these symptoms do occur, medical attention should be sought right away. The disease should be treated with antibiotics as soon as it is detected,” Ms. Harris said. She pointed out that failure to expeditiously treat leptospirosis can result in kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure and respiratory distress. “It can also be fatal,” she added.Release: JIS
The 26-year-old winger has been playing very well recently with Crystal Palace, and the team’s manager wanted to recognize that.Winger Jeffrey Schlupp scored in Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup Fifth Round. And thanks to his goal, the team will play in the Quarterfinals for the second time in 23 years. This is why Palace boss Roy Hodgson took some time off to praise his footballer.“He’s been fantastic this season, especially these last games,” the manager was quoted by The Standard.“It was another important goal, his fifth and that’s not bad coming from midfield, playing in a position where he has to do a lot of defending.”“It was a cracking goal, to run from two yards in your own half, hold the ball that long, hold off challenges then strike it as well as he did was a great start for us,” he added.Schlupp is a German-born Ghanian footballer who came out of the Leicester City youth system. He played for the Foxes from 2010 to 2017, with a small loan to Brentford in 2011.Liverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United. But he was bought by Crystal Palace on the summer of 2017, where he is enjoying good progress.“We obviously knew if we got past this round, we’d be in a good position to get to Wembley,” Schlupp added.“Of course this is a special tournament and hopefully with the luck of the draw we might get a ‘lesser’ team, if that’s what you want to call it, to have a better chance of getting through.”“But obviously any trip to Wembley is special and hopefully we can do that,” the winger concluded. That winning feeling! 🎉Our Crystal Palace hospitality ticket winner @twitisme had a blast being shown around the ground, having a fabulous meal at Speroni’s restaurant along with the best seats in the house 👍We hope you enjoyed it Wayne! 😃#CPFC pic.twitter.com/WMIuWwsXlZ— Otto Van (@ottovanuk) February 15, 2019

MASS TURNOUTSHundreds of thousands more women thronged New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver and Boston, adding to a public outpouring of mass dissent against Trump unmatched in modern U.S. politics for a new president’s first full day in office.So-called Sister March organizers estimated 750,000 demonstrators swarmed the streets of Los Angeles, one of the largest of Saturday’s gatherings. Police said the turnout there was as big or bigger than a 2006 pro-immigration march that drew 500,000.Some 400,000 marchers assembled in New York City, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio, though organizers put the number there at 600,000.The Chicago event grew so large that organizers staged a rally rather than trying to parade through the city. Police said more than 125,000 people attended, while sponsors estimated the crowd at 200,000, the same tally they reported for Boston, and Denver..Smaller protests were held in such cities as Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Madison, Wisconsin, and Bismarck, North Dakota. The protests, mostly peaceful, illustrated the depth of division in a country still reeling from the bitterly fought 2016 election campaign. Trump stunned the world by defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton, a former secretary of state and first lady who made history as the first woman nominated for president by a major U.S. political party.Pam Foyster, a resident of Ridgway, Colorado, said the atmosphere in Washington reminded her of mass protests during the 1960s and ’70s against the Vietnam War and in favor of civil rights and women’s rights.”I’m 58 years old, and I can’t believe we are having to do this again,” Foyster said.Although Republicans now control the White House and both houses of Congress, Trump faces entrenched opposition from wide segments of the public, in contrast with the honeymoon period new presidents typically experience when first taking office.A recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found Trump had the lowest favorability rating of any incoming U.S. president since the 1970s. Hundreds of thousands of women filled the streets of major American cities to lead an unprecedented wave of international protests against President Donald Trump, mocking and denouncing the new U.S. leader the day after his inauguration.Women activists, outraged by Trump’s campaign rhetoric and behavior they found to be especially misogynistic, spearheaded scores of marches in the United States and sympathy rallies around the world on Saturday.Organizers said they drew nearly 5 million protesters in all, far surpassing crowd expectations. The demonstrations also highlighted strong discontent over Trump’s comments and policy positions toward a wide range of groups, including Mexican immigrants, Muslims, the disabled and environmentalists. In contrast to the heated, often shrill tone of the presidential campaign, and the grim imagery of “American carnage” Trump evoked in his inaugural address, the mood during Saturday’s protests was largely upbeat, even festive.Chanting such slogans as, “We need a real leader, not a creepy tweeter,” and “Hey-hey, ho-ho, Donald Trump has got to go,” many marchers wore knitted pink cat-eared “pussy hats” in a reference to Trump’s boast, in a 2005 video made public weeks before the election, about grabbing women by the genitals. While women constituted the bulk of the demonstrators, many were accompanied by husbands, boyfriends and children. The planned centerpiece of the protests, a Women’s March on Washington, appeared to draw larger crowds than turned out a day earlier to witness Trump’s swearing-in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. No official estimates of the turnout were available, but it clearly exceeded the 200,000 marchers projected in advance by organizers, filling long stretches of downtown Washington around the White House and the National Mall. AROUND THE WORLDWomen-led protests against Trump, who has vowed that U.S. policy would be based on the principle of “America first,” also were staged in Sydney, London, Tokyo and other cities across Europe and Asia.Sister March sponsors boasted some 670 gatherings around the world in solidarity with the Washington event, estimating a global turnout of more than 4.6 million participants tallied through online march registrations, although those numbers could not be independently verified.Trump, in a Twitter post on Saturday, wrote, “I am honored to serve you, the great American People, as your 45th President of the United States!”Attending an interfaith service at Washington National Cathedral before visiting the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters, Trump made no mention of the protests. But he angrily attacked media reports, including photos, showing that crowds at Friday’s inaugural were smaller than those seen in 2009 and 2013, when Barack Obama took the oath of office for his first and second terms as president.”I made a speech, I looked out, the field was, it looked like a million, million and a half people,” Trump said at his CIA visit. “They showed a field where there were practically nobody standing there.”Saturday’s march in Washington overwhelmed the city’s Metro subway system, with enormous crowds reported and some stations temporarily forced to turn away riders. The Metro reported 275,000 rides as of 11 a.m. (1600 GMT) Saturday, 82,000 more than the 193,000 reported at the same time on Friday, Inauguration Day, and eight times normal Saturday volume. The peaceful atmosphere of Saturday’s march contrasted sharply with unrest the day before, when groups of black-clad anti-establishment activists, among hundreds of anti-Trump protesters, smashed windows, set vehicles on fire and fought with riot police, who responded with stun grenades.Washington prosecutors said about $100,000 in damage had been done and 230 adults and five minors had been arrested.Clinton won the popular vote in the Nov. 8 presidential election by around 2.9 million votes and exceeded Trump’s support among women voters by more than 10 percentage points. Trump, however, easily prevailed in the state-by-state Electoral College vote that actually determines the outcome of the race.Trump offered few if any olive branches to his opponents in his Friday inauguration speech.”He has never seemed particularly concerned about people who oppose him,” said Neil Levesque, executive director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College. But the lawmakers who Trump needs onside to achieve his policy goals may be more sensitive to the show of mass opposition demonstrated by the anti-Trump rallies, Levesque said.”Members of Congress are very sensitive to the public mood, and many of them are down here this week to see him,” Levesque said.
US Marines returned to Afghanistan’s volatile Helmand Saturday, where American troops faced heated fighting until NATO’s combat mission ended in 2014, as embattled Afghan security forces struggle to beat back the resurgent Taliban. The deployment of some 300 Marines to the poppy-growing southern province came one day after the militants announced the launch of their “spring offensive”, and as the Trump administration seeks to craft a new strategy in Afghanistan.Commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan General John Nicholson attended a handover ceremony marking the return of the prestigious force, the first Marines in Afghanistan since 2014, an AFP photographer said.Part of a regular troop rotation announced in January under the Obama administration, they will arrive in stages, eventually numbering some 300 who will take part in NATO’s train, assist and advise mission.Helmand for years was the centrepiece of the US and British military intervention in Afghanistan—only for it to slip deeper into a quagmire of instability.“In those days Afghan security forces were tiny and just got started,” Brigadier General Roger Turner told AFP. “With the leadership in place now they… are poised to do much better.”The Taliban effectively control or contest 10 of Helmand’s 14 districts, blighted by a huge opium harvest that helps fund the insurgency.Around 30,000 people fled fighting in the province in 2016, mostly seeking refuge in provincial capital Lashkar Gah, with the city at times practically besieged. The US has some 8,400 troops in Afghanistan with about another 5,000 from NATO allies, mostly taking part in the training mission.Pentagon chief Jim Mattis warned of “another tough year” in Afghanistan when he visited Kabul this week as part of the Trump administration’s review of Afghan policy. Nicholson has called for a few thousand more troops to help break the “stalemate”.Mirza Mohammad Yarmand, a retired Afghan general based in Kabul, was optimistic.“If the Afghan forces and the US Marines jointly fight the phenomenon of the terrorism in southern Helmand, we will have tangible results,” he told AFP.But former Marine James Clark, who served twice in Helmand and now writes for military website Task & Purpose, called the deployment “half-measures”.“What lasting gains can our small military presence accomplish in Afghanistan that we couldn’t achieve during the height of the troop surge?” he told AFP.‘Butcher of Kabul’ returnsThe Helmand ceremony came as one of Afghanistan’s most notorious warlords, ex-prime minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, returned to public life Saturday after more than 20 years in exile.Hekmatyar, white-bearded and clad in his trademark black turban, called on the Taliban to lay down their weapons and join a “caravan of peace” as he spoke at a rally in Laghman province.Known widely as the “Butcher of Kabul”, Hekmatyar is chiefly remembered for his role in the bloody civil war of the 1990s, in which he stands accused of killing thousands of people in the capital Kabul. He is set to return there on Sunday. His comeback following a landmark peace agreement with President Ashraf Ghani in September has been hugely controversial in Afghanistan, sparking revulsion from human rights groups and residents of the capital.Afghanistan has seen intensified Taliban attacks across the country, leaving Afghan forces—already beset by killings, desertions, and vacuums in leadership and morale—stretched on multiple fronts and facing soaring casualties.Last week the Taliban delivered a stinging blow as militants dressed in Afghan army uniforms slaughtered at least 135 young recruits at a northern base, according to official figures—though multiple sources say the death toll is much higher. The Marines were among the first US forces sent to Afghanistan after the 2001 terror attacks in the United States.Several thousand were deployed in Helmand, the deadliest province for US and British forces, where they engaged in bitter combat with the Taliban insurgency. The US is also targeting Islamic State’s affiliate in Afghanistan, earlier this month dropping its largest non-nuclear bomb on the jihadist group’s hideouts. Two US troops were killed Wednesday while fighting IS militants near the blast-site in eastern Nangarhar province in an incident potentially involving friendly fire, the Pentagon has said, adding an investigation has been launched.

Some extra faith can never be a bad thing. The core theme of Ekta Jain’s paintings is ‘Hope and never to despair’. The illuminated niches , rays of sun lighting up the dark crevices, beams of radiance dispelling the gloom are subtle statements occupying the focal point in her creations.Jain’s artwork is autobiographical and bears a close resemblance to her ‘never say die’ spirit and cheerful demeanor, finding vivid translation in her formations and fabrications on the canvas. Her abstracts are reflective of hope and faith; of assurance and conviction of trust and optimism. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’There is a symmetrical oneness in her apparently diversified expressions like her name ‘Ekta’ which implies unity, uniformity, solidarity and homogeneity. Her play with colours started at a tender age till it metamorphosed into emphatic narrations. Her journey to urban spaces is punctuated by her desire to discover layers upon layers of soul’s responses to civility or lack of it. The innate desire led her to formulate and execute her concept without any formal exercise in art.Her paintings are like palimpsest. Elusive at times and evasive but at the end of it the works come across as strokes of hope and happiness.
5 min read Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. In his book Ultimate Guide to Optimizing Your Website, SEO and online marketing expert Jon Rognerud shows you how to build a high-performance website and get top ranking on all search engines. In this edited excerpt, the author explains how to find out what keywords your competitors are using and how you can use that data to improve your search engine rankings. It’s important when analyzing keywords that you know which keywords your competitors use and if you’re in the proper league to either continue to use them or try for keywords that are still popular yet not used as often. Some paid keyword analyzers can tell you which competitors use which keywords, but this is often limited to what’s used for Google AdSense campaigns. A good way to determine what keywords your competitors are using is to use keyword research tools to extract keywords from their pages, and then copy and paste your selected keyword into a search engine such as Yahoo! or Google to see where they show up.An easy way to find target keywords for your competitors is to see what Google thinks they are by using the new interface to Google Keyword External tool (updated to look and act like the version supplied within Google AdWords.) The new keyword tool allows you to select languages, local search targets and more.Use these steps to discover keywords from competitor domains:Access the keyword tool and log in.Input your competitor’s web address.Review the listings, and scroll down to view all and see the collection of keywords including ad group ideas. You would pick the keywords that have (exact) search counts and that closely match your site as a starting formula. A combination of head and long-tail keywords should be included in an Excel tracking sheet. As you enter some of these keywords into Google, you’ll see varying results for paid results. These will help you understand how “commerce viable” a keyword is. The more ads, the more you can consider it to be a moneymaker. You can further input top keywords into Spyfu.com and Keywordspy.com to discover more detail, including potential paid campaigns and their resulting landing pages. This will give you a broad view of your competitor’s use of keywords, pages and overall strategy. For each of the top five sites, select keywords that seem reasonable, match your market and have search volume, and then take a look at the results that come up. Don’t worry as much about the sponsored listings, as these spots are out of your league if you have limited funds. Expand the research, and focus on the first ten direct listings of the search engine results. Ask yourself: Do these listings relate to the keyword at hand?Having the exact keyword phrase in your title helps you rank better with search engines. Additionally, you can check on the number of inbound links of these sites. Use LinkVendor to do this. If you have a Google webmaster account (you should!), your incoming links will be revealed there. Rather than simply hunting down links, however, search for quality links back to you, which are of higher priority. The search engine will return how many inbound links the website has. Make sure to select the “Except from this domain”–we want to show only external links, not links within the site. Now, what do you do with all this information, particularly if the number is high? Even if the number of inbound links is in the thousands, you don’t necessarily have to discount a keyword. In order for inbound links to be useful for search engines, they must relate to the keywords used throughout your website. For example, if you’re looking to rank well for refinancing loans yet your inbound links are for subprime mortgage loans, you’ll get a good search engine ranking for subprime mortgage loans rather than what you originally wanted, which was refinancing loans. A solid information architecture with keyword research to build out your pages will help avoid this problem. You’ll make sure that you target pages across your site, not just your homepage. You’ll get some legitimate traffic, since some subprime loans are also refinancing loans, but the traffic wouldn’t be as relevant as if you had inbound links that related directly to refinancing loans. If this is what’s happening with your competitor’s keywords, you can take advantage of it by creating a site with the appropriate inbound links. How can you determine if a competitor’s inbound links relate to the keywords used on its site? OpensiteExplorer.org will show your competitors’ anchor text and a lot more around domain authority, diversity of linking domains, which is important, and total links.A powerful tool that you can try on a 30-day free trial is Market Samurai. It provides a complete, integrated system for all online marketing efforts, and it’s a killer tool. The link analysis can show you all incoming links sorted by page rank or by anchor text use, and can easily be exported. Find out who they are, and submit for a link. You may be surprised to find out that top, or first page, listings of Google have low page rank values but extremely targeted page and anchor text matches. This is a big secret to success. You can effectively compete even if a site has a smaller number of legitimate inbound links. The key is to ensure that your links directly relate to the keywords used on your site; if your competitors don’t, you may be rewarded with top placement.
