VR needs more Disneystyle magic like The Void from CES 2019

I didn’t try their more magical, more haunted house-like Nicodemus experience yet. And The Void’s upcoming Marvel VR experience could introduce even more tricks. But Hickman is quick to explain that the best immersive experiences come from a leap of trust, using key early moments to encourage people to reach out and touch real walls and buttons with your fingers.I got so used to seeing Bridget next to me as a cartoon that I didn’t think to look down and realize my avatar had no feet. The Void doesn’t use trackers on legs or feet yet, but it never bothered me. Bridget’s avatar seemed to have legs. So I assumed I did, too. The illusion was complete.The Void’s roughly 15-minute “rides” work with up to four people and cost roughly $30 a person, which is a splurge. But, it’s cheaper than a vacation to Disney.The Void’s not the only company pursuing Disney-fied VR. Audi’s Marvel-themed VR Holoride debuted at this year’s CES, the company tuning its immersive thrills to work while riding in an actual car. Maybe it’s not a surprise that both are Disney-themed. And that’s the type of feeling more VR still needs. Star Wars stormtroopers beckon from the windows.We’ve come to climb inside Disney’s Ralph Breaks The Internet movie at CES 2019, courtesy of The Void’s location-based VR experience, “Ralph Breaks VR,” just down the hall from the halls of the show.Ralph Breaks VR launched last fall, and isn’t “new” for CES. It’s the first of five Disney experiences the company’s creating in partnership with ILMxLab, including one based on a 2019 Marvel movie (they won’t say which one yet). But it still wowed me, a seasoned vet of location-based VR, at a show already filled with other tech vying for my attention. It impressed both CNET editor Bridget Carey and myself, and worked a perfect blend of thrill ride and comforting onboarding. Even after all these years of VR, and especially with so much VR fatigue, good immersive design matters a lot. Even with heavy backpacks, I had a blast at The Void.The Void’s immersive experiences have been running at 11 locations around the world, with a Washington, DC center coming soon. I last tried holodeck-like multiroom experiences in 2016, putting on a VR backpack and zapping ghosts in Ghostbusters Dimension. Now, Bridget and I are choosing Disney character identities from little cards on a table. We watch a short movie on a screen, where Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz tell us what we’re about to do.Then we put on our VR backpacks and vibrating haptic vests to dive in to Wreck-It Ralph. There’s a good chance you still haven’t tried any location-based VR. Think of a room where you can wander around in VR, but the objects in the room are perfectly mapped so you can reach out and feel the wall, press a button, open a door. The Void’s founder and chief creative officer, Curtis Hickman, is a magician who explores working ideas of illusion, theater and magic theory to trick our brains better in VR.Despite advanced VR backpacks and hand-tracking sensors that can show my fingers virtually, The Void’s experiences also use good-old fashioned theatrical tech like fans and heaters. A room can feel toasty. A balcony in the Disney-fied version of the internet feels breezy. Turks seek alternative media as news landscape shrinks

A gritty area dominated by car repair workshops in the backstreets of Istanbul. There’s no sign outside — just a photocopied sheet of paper pinned to the door requesting silence: “Broadcast in Progress”.Welcome to the headquarters of Turkish broadcaster Medyascope, an almost three-year-old alternative voice in an increasingly constricted media landscape in Turkey and an example of what new media can offer even in tough circumstances.The door swings open to reveal a surprisingly standard television studio with a desk and coloured background. A team of young editors are glued to their laptops around a large table, whispering excitedly, preparing the next broadcast.Medyascope, which was founded in 2015 by leading Turkish journalist Rusen Cakir, does not broadcast through satellite let alone terrestrial TV, but rather via new media like Facebook, YouTube and Periscope.Every weekday it presents several hours of live debate from voices across the political spectrum with a freedom increasingly absent from the major news channels in Turkey under the rule of president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.’No other channels left’ Awarded the Free Media Pioneer Award by the International Press Institute (IPI) in 2016, its importance has grown as ownership changes and increasingly adverse conditions for reporters have limited the media spectrum, encouraging prominent Turkish journalists to join the channel and frustrated viewers to watch it.And with Turkey heading for presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24 at a time when journalists complain of a lack of pluralism in traditional media dominated by coverage of Erdogan, its voice is ever more important.”There are no other channels left in Turkey, where journalists like myself, with a mainstream media background, could work today,” said presenter Isin Elicin, formerly a prominent anchor on the NTV news channel.”The mainstream media are not broadcasting news in the way that people need to be informed. They look for sources that do alternative but independent, objective journalism. And they find us,” she said.Elicin, once a familiar face on mainstream Turkish TV, insisted it was essential that alternative media did not become identified as pro-opposition.”The main goal of Medyascope is to do journalism. It’s not the journalists’ job to do opposition. It’s our guests who make the comments,” she said.’Extending government grip’ Just ahead of the snap elections announcement, Turkey’s media world was struck in April by the thunderbolt-like announcement that the largest media group, Dogan Media Group, was being sold by Dogan Holding to its rival, Demiroren Group.The Dogan Media Group owns some of the country’s biggest media brands like the Hurriyet daily and CNN Turk news channel. While not seen as outright opposition media, they were regarded as bastions of independent journalism.But analysts have seen the takeover as a clear attempt by the government to exercise control over these media. Demiroren Group’s chairman Erdogan Demiroren is considered close to the president, while his son, Yildirim, runs the Turkish Football Federation.With the sale approved by Turkey’s competition authority, the changes have come fast at Hurriyet and CNN Turk, which have seen an exodus of talent, with prominent CNN Turk anchor Ahu Ozyurt the latest to go.In an op-ed in Hurriyet, Erdogan Demiroren appeared to indicate change was needed, saying media should “stay away from destructiveness and return to its stance of constructive criticism.”Marc Pierini, a visiting scholar at Carnegie Europe, said increasing control over the media was one of several instruments used by the government to ensure victory in the elections seen as a watershed for Turkey.”Favourable sales of media groups to government-friendly businesses is extending the government’s grip on the press,” he said.The furore over the acquisition of Dogan Media is nothing new.The Milliyet and Vatan dailies had already been sold to Demiroren by Dogan in 2011, while the Sabah daily, once an independently-minded newspaper, is now an unashamedly pro-government title following ownership changes in 2007. ‘Emerged out of a necessity’ Some independent titles do remain, such as the anti-Erdogan Cumhuriyet and the leftist BirGun. But the price can be high and 13 staff of Cumhuriyet were convicted on terror offences in April although they remain free pending appeal.In a sign of the thirst for news from such sources, top Turkish journalists have amassed colossal numbers of social media followers who enjoy their sometimes piquant views — the popular host of Fox TV’s evening news show, Fatih Portakal, has more than 5.95 million Twitter followers.While private and state networks tend to broadcast every word of Erdogan’s speeches from greetings to farewells, those of main opposition candidate Muharrem Ince are usually cut, while opposition nationalist Meral Aksener is barely shown at all.Burak Tatari, another anchor at Medyascope and formerly of weekly magazine Tempo, said that audiences in Turkey were failing to find access to the information they needed in mainstream media, with interview subjects and material filtered.He said that the main limit on Medyascope’s growth was financing, with advertising difficult to attract and the bulk of its revenues coming from grants from international foundations.”Medyascope has emerged out of a necessity,” he said. “We are trying to do here what the mainstream media should do.”last_img read more

DC Resident Steps Up to Find Citys Missing Black Kids

first_imgA Northeast Washington D.C. resident launched a project more than three years ago to help the community locate missing people. Now, the organization uses social media pages to alert the public about missing persons within the District’s eight wards.Henderson Long started an organization that uses Facebook to post the photos and information of missing Black children from Wards 7 and 8.Henderson Long, 48, is the founder of Missing and Exploited East of the River Ward 7 and 8, a Facebook page with more than 12,000 followers that allows residents to post photos and information of missing loved ones.“I have a passion for finding and locating kids and getting them back to their families,” Long told the AFRO on Apr. 18.Long was drawn to the issue of disappearing people when one of his family members went missing a few years ago. He said he realized how difficult it is to locate a missing person, especially a child. “I know the feeling so I try to get out there on the ground to help other families,” Long said.“It requires a lot of resources,” Long continued. He said he became a certified investigator and began assisting law enforcement and neighbors with solving missing person cases when he noticed that police were understaffed.There are currently 1,067 reported missing persons in D.C., according to the Metropolitan Police Department.Last year, 90 percent of the cases that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children helped law enforcement solve involved endangered runaways.“Runaways are no different than a person who may have been abducted when you look at what they can get involved in,” Long said. He said runaways can be victims of sex trafficking, crime and abuse.Long said he would prefer for celebrities to promote the cases of girls who are actually missing in D.C. like Unique Harris, who was last seen in 2010, and not comment on misinformation like the tweet that erroneously reported that 14 Black girls went missing in a period of 24 hours. The false post did however push Mayor Muriel Bowser to create a task force for missing people in D.C. on Mar. 24.Long said he is working with the Mayor’s office on her new initiatives to increase officer staffing and publicizing missing  people, as well as assessing the root causes of children running away from home.He said he wants to “close the revolving door” on repeat runaways. “If you send them right back to the same environment they are going to run away again,” Long said.Long’s family member has runaway from home more than once and he fears for her life, “It’s heartbreaking,” he said. She is almost 18-years-old and Long said she has experienced physical abuse while being away from home.He advises parents to take precautions when it comes to protecting children. Long said parents should keep fingerprints, photographs, dental and medical records of children just in case a child is lost. These items can be helpful in locating and identifying youth.He added that parents should educate their children on their surroundings and make sure they have a good sense of direction, and memorize their home address. “More kids get lost than abducted,” Long said.last_img read more
