May is Stroke Awareness Month – Learn the signs

first_imgPrevent having a stroke – check for A-Fib  One of several health focuses in May, is stroke awareness. This is extremely important in the community as so often men and women, who otherwise seem healthy are victims of a stroke. Some stroke victims are left physically impaired, and, unfortunately, die as the result of a stroke. What is a stroke?A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds, or when there’s a blockage, a blood clot,  in the blood supply to the brain. The rupture or blockage prevents blood and oxygen from reaching the brain’s tissues.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States. Every year, more than 795,000 U.S. people have a stroke. One of the unknown factors that causes stroke, according to local cardiologists, is a cardiac condition known as Atrial Fibrillation or A-Fib. This condition affects some 2.2 million people in the U.S. annually, and pertains to an irregular heartbeat, often caused when the two upper chambers of the heart beat unpredictably and sometimes rapidly. These irregular heartbeats can cause blood to collect in the heart and potentially form a clot, which can travel to a person’s brain and cause a stroke. Some people have pronounced symptoms of A Fib as they will sense a pulsating, rapid heartbeat over a period of time. But A Fib can also be asymptomatic, that is without any symptom.  This type of A-Fib, paroxysmal A Fib, can be quite dangerous, resulting in blood clots that cause a stroke.A Fib is more common in people over age 60, and more common in those with diabetes and high blood pressure. Without symptoms some people are not aware of the problem until they have an electrocardiogram (ECG) done during the course of an annual or bi-annual physical, when an irregular heart beat is determined.Cardiologists caution that people with A-Fib are several times   more likely to have a stroke.Symptoms of A-Fib When they are symptoms of A-Fib, these may include the following: Frequent heart palpitations; felling tired and out of breath with little exertion; unusual sweatiness, feeling dizzy and light headed, or fainting spells; pain or pressure in the chest; experiencing anxiety or panicky.  If these symptoms reoccur, people should visit their doctor as s soon as possible, so the appropriate tests can be conducted to determine the cause.Medical tests for A-FibThe first, and more common test to determine if one has A-Fib is the ECG which will measure the rhythm of your heartbeat for a few minutes. If the readout of the ECG detects any irregularity, one is usually refereed to a cardiologist who will conduct more advanced tests. These tests will likely include a Stress test, which included another ECG but normally conducted while the patient you walk on a treadmill or when you take a medicine that makes your heart beat faster. The cardiologists may also prescribe that the patient wear an Holter, a small device attached to the chest, which is in effect a portable ECG that measures one’s heart rhythm during a period, normally at least 24 hours. TreatmentIf A-Fib is confirmed the cardiologists will recommend treatment.Typically, the first course of treatment is to be prescribed with blood thinning medication to prevent clots which could cause a stroke. One of the more common blood thinner is aspirin, preferably Baby Aspirins 81mg, which are chewable, and can be taken at least once daily. However, there are strong blood thinning medication, and depends on the patients’s condition the doctor will make the appropriate prescription.Depending on the severity of the A-Fib the cardiologist could treat the condition with cardioversion  a procedure that stimulate the heart to its regular rhythm with medication or low bursts of electricity. It’s extremely important that people with A-Fib, especially, paroxysmal A-Fib, adjust their lifestyle significantly in order to improve the condition of their heart, and minimize the risks of blood clots, and therefore strokes. Those diagnosed with A-Fib must not some, eat a heart-healthy diet, exercise – include walking-  regularly; avoid weight gain, avoid alcohol especially where this triggers A-Fib symptoms, and most importantly avoid a live of stress or stressful situations. In summary a healthy fat, sugar, salt free diet, regular light exercise, and  a stress-free life will be useful I countering A-Fib, and the possibility of blood clots that could cause a stroke.last_img read more

Sir Alan Budd to provide key note interview at ICE London

first_img Submit Cross-party think-tank calls for £100 monthly limit on gambling August 5, 2020 Share ICE London has secured a notable coup with confirmation that prominent British Economist, Sir Alan Budd will provide the key note ahead of the ICE Annual Regulators Luncheon.  Sir Alan, who was a founding member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee as well as a former senior economic adviser to HM Treasury and whose Gambling Review Report (2001) provided the foundation for current British gambling legislation, will provide his unparalleled insight and analysis in a live interview with Dan Waugh of international strategic gambling consultancy, Regulus Partners. Waugh, who spent nine years as Group Strategy Director at The Rank Group and advises clients on the development of responsible gambling programmes, believes the recommendations made in the Budd Report remain highly relevant.  He emphasised: “Given that the report will be 17 years old in July – and that the British gambling industry has changed so significantly in that time, it is remarkable how fresh and relevant the report feels today even though it was published at a time when internet gambling was in its infancy and the smartphone was just a glint in the eye of Steve Jobs. “Critically, the report was focused on how legislation might best serve the interests of the consumer – both in terms of promoting choice and enjoyment and in terms of harm prevention. This contrasts with traditional approaches of seeking to balance fiscal benefits against harm. Also valuable was the Budd Report’s repeated recommendation that reviews be conducted – both on a periodic basis and in response to specific events – in order to ensure that legislation remained relevant to intended outcomes. Sadly, this recommendation was largely ignored – which may explain why issues of gambling regulation are now so vexed just a decade after the full implementation of the Gambling Act.”Dan Waugh believes the Gambling Review Report contains lessons for other jurisdictions many of whose gaming officials and regulators will be represented at ICE London.  He stated: “The overall approach offers a model for both international jurisdictions as well as for Great Britain. I think the lessons are, be clear about policy objectives; take time to consider what regulation and legislation will best deliver aims; focus primary legislation on principles, permit the regulator and/or Government to adapt the details in an agile fashion, ensure that the Government and regulator can draw on an independent and scientifically robust evidence base for re-calibrating regulation and build-in review mechanisms to identify and tackle issues early.”Kate Chambers, Managing Director of Clarion Gaming added: “We are delighted to be able to confirm Sir Alan Budd’s attendance at the world’s most influential gaming exhibition.  As well as making a major contribution to the review of gambling legislation Sir Alan has advised chancellors, held academic roles in Britain and the United States, served as a founder member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee and as a senior economic adviser to the Treasury.  “His participation at the Regulators Luncheon will be one of the many highlights of what is promising to be another key gathering of all sections of the international gaming business community.” Covid concerns see Clarion Gaming move ICE 2021 to April    July 15, 2020 Related Articles HBLB ups prize money commitment by 50% July 31, 2020 StumbleUpon Sharelast_img read more

Bayern Munich smash Dortmund 5-0 in Der Klassiker

first_img Source: BBC German champions Bayern Munich thrashed title rivals Borussia Dortmund to move back to the top of the Bundesliga with six games remaining.Dortmund, who were two points clear heading into this match, were shell-shocked following a ruthless first-half display from the hosts.Goals from Robert Lewandowski, Mats Hummels, Serge Gnabry and Javi Martinez gave Bayern a 4-0 lead at half-time.Bayern are chasing a seventh consecutive Bundesliga title. In a showdown described as the “biggest in Europe this season”,Dortmund’s title hopes suffered a blow and extended their losing streak at the Allianz Arena to five games. At the start of December, the title race looked to be over with Dortmund nine points clear at the top, but Bayern took advantage of the stuttering form of their rivals to claw back the deficit. And as if intended as a timely reminder of Bayern’s pedigree, Lewandowski became the second-fastest player to score 200 goals in the German top flight, doing so in 284 games. His Bayern side are aiming to win a 29th league title and could add the German Cup after reaching the semi-finals with a victory over second-division side Heidenheim.Over in a flashDortmund’s free-flowing football had propelled them to the top of the table with seven games remaining but they were taught a lesson by a Bayern side hungry to retain their title. There weren’t any initial signs of a collapse – midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud hit the outside of the post within eight minutes as Dortmund looked bright. But ex-Dortmund centre-back Hummels proved more clinical when his towering header thumped into the back of the net just minutes later. After the opener, Dortmund struggled to keep pace with their title rivals and eventually the pressure took its toll.Dan-Axel Zagadou’s clumsy pass fell straight to Lewandowski and the former Dortmund striker lifted the ball over the keeper and slotted it into an open net to double Bayern’s lead.Bayern’s pressure was relentless – Dortmund keeper Roman Burki was forced to tip Thomas Muller’s header over the bar before making two smart low saves to deny Hummels and Lewandowski. But Burki’s heroics were short-lived as Javi Martinez pounced on a rebound to fire Bayern into a 3-0 lead within 40 minutes.Gnabry rubbed further salt into the wounds two minutes later with a pin-point header from Muller’s cross and Lewandowski picked up his second of the night with a tap-in a minute before full-time.Dortmund’s humiliation was confirmed at half-time but they remain only a point behind in a thrilling title race.Bayern’s slip-up last week against Freiburg suggests there could still be more twists to come.Lewandowski breaks more records – best of the statsFor the first time since 2001-02, there is only a one-point margin between the first two teams in the Bundesliga after 28 games – back then, Dortmund trailed one point behind Bayer Leverkusen, but became champions in the end.Bayern have won their last eight home games in the Bundesliga, scoring 29 goals, while conceding only two.Bayern have also scored 19 goals in their last four home matches against Dortmund and only conceded twice.Centre-back Hummels’ four shots on target in the first half was more than the entire Dortmund team combined. For the first time, Martinez has scored four competitive goals in one season for Bayern.Lewandowski has now scored 15 goals in this fixture (14 for Bayern, one for Dortmund) – surpassing Gerd Muller’s previous record of 14.Lewandowski also became the first player in Bundesliga history to score in five consecutive games against a former club.last_img read more
