The team had to overcome a six point half-time deficit to book their place in the league decider in which they will face Inishowen neighbours Muff. The last time the the two teams met it was the boys of Muff who took the spoils with the narrowest of wins but it was a game that could have gone either way and the final is sure to be an entertaining affair. It would be great for the team to have a good vocal support and full details of venue and time for the final will be posted later in the week.SENIOR & RESERVES.The Reserves and Seniors both suffered defeats in their respective Championships this weekend. The Reserves falling to Naomh Mhuire in the preliminary round decider by a score of 8 points to 6. This ends the Reserves involvement in the Championship for 2012 but they are still in a strong position in the league and will look to get their good form going again when that competition resumes. The Seniors suffered an 8 point defeat at the hands of Termon but will at least have the chance to atone for that loss when Termon come to Straid next Sunday afternoon at 3.00pm. The team is really going to have to rise to the occasion if they are going to lift themselves out of the slump of the past few weeks and a good show of support will be crucial in helping them to do that. Focus on Cincinnati: Can 49ers handle ‘new’ Bengals?

first_imgDon’t be fooled by another Cincinnati loss on Sunday, these aren’t the same Bengals who’ve wallowed in or near the AFC North cellar the past three seasons.Energized by young (36 years old) and innovative head coach Zac Taylor, who was on Sean McVay’s Rams staff the past two years, the surprising Bengals nearly upset the Seahawks in Seattle, ultimately falling 21-20. They’ve got a new-found passing attack, engineered by first-year offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, the former De La Salle …last_img read more

How Did Earth Get Its Phosphorus?

first_imgThe element phosphorus is hard to get to a planet’s surface where it is needed.Phosphorus, abbreviated P with atomic number 15, is an essential element in all living organisms. How do organisms use phosphorus?Phosphorus is an essential element in nucleic acids (DNA, RNA).The energy molecule ATP has three phosphate groups. A cell spends enormous effort recycling ATP.Phosphorylation is an important regulatory step in many cell processes.Cell membranes are composed of phospholipids.Bones and tooth enamel get their hardness from hydroxyapatite, a phosphorus-containing mineral.Phosphorus is taken up by plants from the soil. Its availability can be a limiting factor in ecosystems.Lack of phosphorus can cause malnutrition.“Oxidative phosphorylation” builds ATP in cells. A chain of complex molecular machines in mitochondria and chloroplasts sets up a proton gradient by carefully extracting electrons from the digestion of our food and passing them through a sequence of reactions (the citric acid cycle), with oxygen as the final acceptor in the electron transport chain. The resulting proton gradient then powers ATP synthase, a rotary engine, that uses the energy to “snap” phosphate groups onto ADP in three reaction centers (see animation by CMI). The ATP molecules can then be sent throughout the cell to power numerous enzymatic reactions that require the energy, such as the walking kinesins that carry cargo, and the numerous enzymes that operate on DNA in the nucleus. For all its value to life, phosphorus can also be toxic. Some of the most potent neurotoxins and pesticides contain phosphorus.Molecular machines at work in a living cell (Illustra Media)A highly reactive atom, phosphorus is never found in its elemental form on earth. Its elemental abundance is one gram per kilogram in Earth’s crust, about 16 times as plentiful as copper. On our planet, most of it is found in insoluble rocks. Phosphate mines have much of the element from the decomposed remains of living organisms. It would be hard to imagine a habitable planet without phosphorus, because most astrobiologists recognize the uniqueness of nucleic acids, ATP and phospholipids for cells. So this poses a question: how did Earth become blessed with so much of this element?Planetary Sources of PhosphorusAn article on NASA’s Astrobiology Magazine purports to tell us “How Phosphorus Came In from the Cold.” Below the pretentious headline of this just-so story, we begin to see problems: “phosphorus is rare” in interplanetary dust clouds. “It is even more scarce in the rest of the Solar System,” Sarah Wild writes. “Phosphorus is one of the key elements in biology,” says Matthew Pasek, an astrobiologist and geochemist at the University of South Florida.Unlike the other elements essential for life, phosphorus is mainly found in solid form, whereas the likes of hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen are often found as a gas. “[Studying phosphorus] keeps us grounded in actual hard rock samples. Unlike the others, there is no obvious gas form, so has to come from rock sources,” Pasek says. “We hope to tie that eventually to biology and life.”Some meteorites contain phosphorus. The problem, then, is how to get those rocks to Earth in sufficient quantities to season the crust with it. Secular cosmologists believe that all the elements beyond lithium (atomic number 3) were “cooked” by supernovae. Phosphorus, therefore, had to come from a supernova, then get incorporated into interstellar dust clouds, from which they believe planetary systems were made. Pasek worries, though, in his recent paper in Icarus, that “Phosphorus would not have been present as a volatile throughout much of the Solar nebula.”Through a convoluted series of steps, Pasek brings phosphorus in from the cold outer reaches of the solar system by suggesting that it existed in a rare gaseous form called phosphine (PH3) in the cold outer reaches of the Solar System beyond Saturn. (Out to Saturn, it would have been locked up in solids.) From there, Pasek has the problem of getting that phosphide gas to Earth. Also, meteorites from those far reaches could have brought phosphorus to Earth in the form of phosphides. How they could have been distributed equally on the early earth was not addressed. One critic of Pasek’s model says that it is “contentious that gas movement toward the Sun, which was not modeled in the paper, could be faster than the diffusion of gas away from the Sun.” It would seem that the latter would predominate. This is an ongoing problem for astrobiologists, in other words. But it’s fun to get paid for thinking about problems that may not have a naturalistic solution. “The work was supported through NASA’s Emerging Worlds Program,” the article ends. “NASA Astrobiology provides resources for this and other Research and Analysis programs within the NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) that solicit proposals relevant to astrobiology research.” NASA money, of course, is taxpayer money.Maybe we need to add another zone to our list of habitable zones: the “Phosphorus Availability Zone.” But this is only a problem for materialists. The Creator tells us in His word that He “made the world to be inhabited” (Isaiah 45:18). Obviously he put the ingredients required for life where they were needed, in the abundances required.See more about habitability requirements in Dr Henry Richter’s book, Spacecraft Earth: A Guide for Passengers, chapter one.For earlier articles on phosphorus and biology, see:Most exoplanets are not habitable (26 June 2018)Why astrobiologists hammer planets (26 Sept 2016)Fooling around with OOL (31 May 2010).Invent animals: Just add phosphorus (11 June 2007)or search on “phosphorus” in the search bar. Africa ‘must enable investment to grow’

first_img23 January 2014Africa needs to create an enabling environment for domestic and foreign investment to realize its potential and ensure inclusive growth for its population, panelists agreed at a special session on the opening day of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday. However, the continent had many challenges to overcome, including addressing a pervasive and growing inequality that was fueling instability. And with the continent’s population expected to rise to 2-billion by 2050, it was imperative that the foundation for sustainable and inclusive growth be laid now.“We need jobs, jobs, jobs,” said Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, one of the panelists at the session dubbed “Africa’s Next Billion”. “Economic and social inclusion is a top priority. We create space for the private sector, and it’s one of government’s responsibilities to distribute the fruits of growth.”More intra-Africa trade could boost economic growth, Mahama added. “I feel ashamed that trade between our countries is only 11%. That is unacceptable.”To build on the progress Africa had made so far, he said, governments also had to continue to realize the democratic dividend of good governance, respect for human rights and rule of law.Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan pointed out that there was stability in most African countries today. “But before we could talk about economic growth, we needed political stability,” he said.Aliko Dangote, chief executive of Nigeria’s Dangote Group and a co-chair of this year’s annual meeting, pointed out that the majority of foreign investors were too cautious in the lead-up to elections and during what could be the short-lived reign of political parties. “Today there is no government that will be against business, so go ahead and invest,” he urged.“People always underestimate what Africa can be,” Dangote said. “By 2050 we will have a united Africa with one common market … Can you imagine if we had sufficient power? Our GDP would be US$9-trillion by 2050. It can happen.”Julian Roberts, group chief executive of Old Mutual, United Kingdom, told participants: “Africa is on the move and it is moving forward. But we need to ensure we have an enabling platform for business.” Roberts said the continent would not succeed unless there was a “handshake between government and the private sector”.If the continent’s infrastructure bottlenecks can be overcome, particularly intra-African transportation routes, intra-Africa trade could flourish and create prosperity,” Roberts added. “Our target should be 80% intra-Africa trade by 2050.”Africa’s economic growth might be accelerating, but, according to Winnie Byanyima, executive director of Oxfam International, United Kingdom: “The concentration of wealth and power is excluding and locking out millions of people, which is driving insecurity and instability.” So far, economic growth had been a race to the bottom, Byanyima said. “We need a race to the top so we have policies and regulation to protect human rights, the environment and reduce poverty.”Doreen Noni, creative director of Eskado Bird, Tanzania, noted that young people in Africa were not trained from a young age to have entrepreneurial skills. Because of its huge young population, Africa’s workforce was set to burgeon by 2050. “We need to awaken our youth … and direct them to be entrepreneurial. We can only get our continent to have inclusive growth if we are educated and change our mindsets.”Source: World Economic Forumlast_img read more

Yrs back when i obtained married i had a light-weight edition of a tiara like this and it was a nightmare to get it to stay in put. I will not believe this will dissappoint any individual seeking to be a princess.A princesses will have to have item. I was sent this merchandise in exchange for an trustworthy overview. This is a wonderful tiara, its compact so would in shape a youngster or an up hair style, its really large which makes it appear to be far more pricey than what it is which is great. Its has loads of unique dimensions crystal rhinestones which when the light-weight captures them they seriously do sparkle. I have a infant daughter so i have set it in her room on a shelf for when shes more mature, and it seems to be fantastic as a decoration in her space. Also perfect for fancy costume or for any very little girl seeking to be a princess. Really advocate this merchandise its stunning and great excellent.Spectacular tiara, diamonds appear sensible much too. On acquiring the tiara i was impressed by the high quality, from a distance the diamonds on the tiara seem authentic. As with most tiara’s this 1 also arrived with a loop at each sides, so the tiara can be securely pinned into spot working with hairpins. This can also be bent into the form of your head way too, for a greater in shape. The tiara was a large amount heavier in weight than i predicted but it seemed to include price to the completed hair piece. I was shocked the hair piece arrived in a resealable bag, while this is excellent for storage. I was anticipating it to arrive in a box. It would’ve manufactured the tiara glance extra expensive. For a apply examination, i secured the tiara in location on my head and carried out my everyday plan in the dwelling for a couple several hours to look at if the tiara would continue to be in location. It handed the test with traveling colors.I wasn’t guaranteed when gained this on how i made use of it, but then i observed the two round holes which you use to adjust it onto the head. Love it somewhat bent on one facet. All gems and crystals are great, none are loose. My daughter was choughedi like its body weight, if you drop it, its not going to snap like my prom tiara.I wore this tiara for promenade, and it looked awesome. It truly is a wonderful weight so when connected to my hair with bobbypins it wouldn’t budge. I truthfully am blown awaycan’t wait to get married in this.I was provided this item for totally free in return for an honest evaluation. Now if you talk to everyone if they’d like to be a princess for a working day i am rather confident that they’d say yes, even men will want to be handled a small specially for a working day. In reality, it was only just lately that a mate of mine turned twenty five and his girlfriend purchased him a tiara for the reason that she claims he is that significantly of a princess. In fairness, it was only a low-priced minimal plastic detail she received and only cost 60p or a thing from a local store but for that 1 working day i you should not consider he could feel any happier. But what if your boyfriend, or a minimal female or it’s possible a bride-to-be would not want any old low cost plastic tiara, what then?. Well, tinksky have come to the rescue with their superbly designed tiara with glowing rhinestones all all-around. It truly is an elegantly developed piece of costume jewellery which in all honesty was a great deal heavier than i was expecting it to be. You could see it sparkle from each individual angle it had that numerous rhinestones masking the glorious crown. What impressed me far more though was that regardless of the glamorous glimpse it felt rather significant and pretty tough as nicely, so if you fell around in it, it really is not heading to snap and split. You will look like a princess. We made use of this as portion of a photobooth at a wedding. It was a little bit far too very good high quality for that but it was well obtained and loved. The ladies truthfully appeared like princesses with the sparkling tiara on prime of their heads. It would not have a comb and desires to be clipped in with hair pins if being worn for for a longer time durations but for the function we applied it for, it was ideal. This tiara is really and is a placing style and design. This tiara is quite and is a putting style and design. Nonetheless the tiara is pretty hefty, which can make it awkward when worn for more time periods. The tiara does glance bulky, primarily from a aspect look at which is a serious shame and limits the designs the tiara satisfies. The tiara genuinely needs to be each thinner and lighter. The tiara needs to be secured into your hair with grips as it will not continue to be in spot otherwise- compared with several other tiaras this does not have combs on the finishes, which is a shame as i uncover that they typically truly feel much more safe. I do like this tiara but truly feel there are a selection of spots for advancement and as such would be reluctant to propose. *acquired from provider to overview this has not motivated my opinion.Content with this, but it did get there with a stone off. . Arrived damaged, the massive middle stone was out. In purchase to glue this back in i experienced to prise the previous glue out which was a major lump. Really rather tiara, but a shame i had to fix it in advance of it could be used. I acquired this for my neices dressy up box for which it is extra that suitable. So i dont intellect far too substantially the simple fact i had to glue it again collectively before it was useable. Its a low-priced ample value for it not be a offer breaker – even so its still not great form obtaining to repair things when they arrive. The tiara has loops at possibly finish so it can effortlessly be clipped into the hair or as i have accomplished for my niece, thread elastic by so it stays on easily & immediately without having faffing on with clips when shes about to perform.Far better than rate would counsel. I will endeavor to confine my critique to good quality, wearability and so forth. And not simply just repeat specifics easily observed in the outstanding listing. The tiara was a significantly considerably improved excellent solution than i was anticipating for the funds, nicely constructed steel body, resilient and incredibly sparkly, superb benefit at £9. My granddaughter confident me it was comfortable and not much too significant, in point at 1 point she forgot she was donning it. A very good top quality exceptional benefit for dollars solution.Tinksky® wedding tiara, bridal crown tiara with crystals rhinestones for wedding, proms, pageants, princess parties, birthdayday onethe parcel arrived and could not hold out to see what was within. Would it be as sparkly as it appeared?would it in good shape?would it last?later on the exact dayit sparkles just like the real matter. Suits properly and can be carefully teased to sit far better. Appears to be to be of a really sturdy design and style. Present her the tiara and she’s confused with joy. Great value and a wonderful existing for by yourself or the princess in your lifetime. I acquired at a discount in trade for an sincere overview. Very good worth for the dollars and shines brilliant like a diamond. Now anybody can be a princess. . If like me you have a daughter who like to be a princess then this tiara from tinksky is a need to get. For a selling price that is equivalent to that of the low-priced awful kinds you get in toy stores you will get a tiara created to the highest excellent. This is a good piece of jewelry, which is a lot more than up to the undertaking of surviving a costume up session with even the roughest and most tumbliest of small princesses. The tiara many thanks to it can be terrific construction is somewhat heavier than your standard toy variations and i would advocate utilizing hair pins to secure it onto you kid’s head. As for how it seems to be, the tiara’s framework appears like shiny silver and the jewels have the look of the purest of diamonds. Any youngster seeking to dress up as a princess, or any adult for that make any difference who wants to do the similar, will be more than the moon to get on of these.Who isn’t going to want to be a princess for a day. This is a extremely fairly priced tiara that mum and daughter could use. When i showed this to my daughter she was ‘can i have it’ i was like allow me at minimum try out it on to start with.Perfectly as i’m meant to be examining product i required to get a great appear at item and test it onas a mum whose daughter has experienced several £3. 99 tiara’s about the many years, i wasnt confident what to hope from this tiara, i was amazed. Its incredibly strong and oh so sparkly, and seems to be a photo on, i just want i experienced somewhere to don it toit doesnt appear with any fixings, so am not sure if it would continue to be in all night without, so i would propose probably attaching some crystal clear elastic. Its not light-weight as i expected but i wouldn’t say it’s also major. I imagine for the selling price its a fantastic merchandise and if you have an occasion to use a tiara it would be a very good buy, furthermore for your very own very little princess as its a lot sturdier that those plastic princess tiaras.last_img read more

Harvest continues Between the Rows

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Jevon Rockwell, Erie CountyWe’ve been really moving along now. We have 800 acres of beans off. The first beans we cut were in the mid-40 range and those were our worst. Since then we have been in the mid-60 range and we did have a 45-acre field average 84 bushels and those were weighed across the scale. In some places on the lighter ground or gravel ridges it seems like the beans died off and then started re-growing. The beans themselves are dry but some of the stems are green. I think those beans got too dry and stalled out for a while then started re-growing. These late rains and nice weather we have had, though, helped them even out and they are easy harvesting now.Either today or tomorrow we are going to get wheat planted. Sitting in line at the elevator has been eating up my schedule as far as getting wheat planted. Probably tomorrow I’ll get it planted. We have not touched any corn yet. We have been cutting about 200 acres of beans a day so in about three days we’ll be done with beans. We’ll go right into corn. A lot of it is starting to break over. I was next to a corn field yesterday cutting beans and you could see corn down pretty bad. It is time to get going with the corn.We have been moving right along. It is good to have nice weather. For the rest of this week’s reports, click here.last_img read more

Congress bypoll pact with Left Front in Bengal gets Sonia nod

first_imgCongress interim president Sonia Gandhi has given her nod to a Congress-Left Front alliance in West Bengal for the upcoming Assembly bypolls in the State, following the party’s dismal performance in the Lok Sabha election, top party sources said on Saturday.Ms. Gandhi held a meeting with West Bengal Congress president Somen Mitra in Delhi on Friday night and discussed various organisational issues, including the upcoming Assembly bypolls in the State, the sources said.“We informed Ms. Gandhi about the seat adjustment we are having with the Left Front for the upcoming bypolls. She told us if the Left Front agrees, then both the parties should go for an alliance,” Mr. Mitra said.Seat adjustmentThe seat adjustment decision was taken by the Congress State leadership when the party had no president after the resignation of Rahul Gandhi from the post. The nod was given by Ms. Gandhi, who was chosen as the party’s interim president earlier this month. Congress sources said Ms. Gandhi’s nod to the alliance is politically significant given the Trinamool Congress’ recent call for uniting of all opposition forces in Bengal in a bid to stop the march of the BJP in the State. “It is quite clear that Ms. Gandhi, despite sharing good relations with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, has chosen the Left for forging an alliance. One of the reasons is that in the 2021 Assembly polls, the fight will be against the TMC government. So just in the name of opposing the BJP, we can’t align with it [TMC],” a senior Congress leader. The West Bengal Congress and the CPI(M) leaderships had recently sealed a seat adjustment for the upcoming bypolls in three Assembly seats in West Bengal. The State leaderships of the two parties have decided that Congress will contest the Kaliaganj seat in North Dinajpur district and Kharagpur in West Midnapore district, while the CPI(M)-led Left Front will contest the Karimpur seat in Nadia district. The Kaliaganj seat fell vacant after the death of sitting Congress MLA Parmathanath Roy, while the election to the Kharagpur seat is being held as its MLA Dilip Ghosh, the State BJP chief, contested and won the Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency. Karimpur MLA Mahua Moitra of TMC had won the Krishnnanagar Lok Sabha seat.last_img read more

Lenny Kravitz Needs Your Help To End Preventable Child Deaths

first_imgLenny Kravitz – GRAMMY award-winning singer-songwriter, record producer and actor – is urging people to join UNICEF to bring about an end to preventable child deaths.Video: Lenny Kravitz: Immunization – we can reach every last childAs many as 1.5 million children die every year from vaccine-preventable diseases.“It’s every parent’s worst nightmare – an extremely ill child,” said Kravitz. “UNICEF’s goal is to make sure that 100 per cent of children are immunized against preventable diseases. Failing to reach every last child is unacceptable, especially when the cost of a vaccine is so little.”Kravitz took time from recording his new album to film Public Service Announcements (PSAs) around the importance of reaching every child with life-saving immunizations. It comes nearly one year after he lent his support to UNICEF’s efforts to save and improve the lives of millions of children by providing them with access to clean water and adequate sanitation. In addition to the PSAs, Kravitz will use his social media platforms to share UNICEF’s call for 100 per cent immunization.Despite immunization remaining one of the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions — a lifesaving immunization against measles costs less than one dollar — nearly 20 per cent of the world’s children are still not immunized.Children in remote areas and in impoverished communities are more likely to not be immunized against killer diseases. This effectively leaves these children unprotected against disability and death. Often times, immunization is a gateway to a healthier life for children of poor and isolated communities. Mass immunization campaigns allow for poor and isolated communities to receive other vital health services like insecticide-treated bed nets and nutritional supplements.“As the largest procurer of vaccines, UNICEF helps immunize more than one third of the world’s children,” said Jos Vandelaer, Chief of Immunization for UNICEF. “UNICEF is well positioned to deliver vaccinations to every last child, which is very important if we are ever to reach a day where 100 per cent of children are fully immunized.”Vaccines are responsible for eradicating smallpox and for preventing an estimated two to three million deaths each year from diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough measles and polio. Fifty years ago, this disease was once one of the most feared diseases in the world. Anyone not immunized against the disease can contract polio, but children under five years of age are especially vulnerable. Timely immunization with today’s safe and effective oral vaccines is the most effective way to prevent infection. As a result, polio is now endemic in only three countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.Source:UNICEFlast_img read more

Germanys Islamist scene growing

first_imgGermany’s domestic security chief warned Sunday that the country’s radical Islamist scene is not only growing, but becoming more decentralised, posing greater challenges to surveillance operations. In an interview with national news agency DPA, Hans-Georg Maassen also defended security officials under fire after it emerged that Berlin truck attack suspect Anis Amri had slipped through their net, saying they had done everything they could.Overall, the number of Salafists—or fundamentalist Sunni Muslims—in Germany has risen to more than 9,700, sharply up from 3,800 people in 2011, said Maassen.“It’s of great concern to us that this scene is not only growing, but it is also very diversified. There is not just one, two, three or four people who have a say,” he warned.“Rather, there are many people who dominate this Salafist scene. And all these people have to be watched.”While in the past, there were a few people who wielded influence, today, there are many small clusters formed by individuals.“So you can no longer talk about a Salafist scene as a whole, but you have to deal with many hotspots. That makes things more difficult for us, because we can no longer just watch a few people. We have to monitor many groups,” he said.In a defence of security officials under pressure for failing to stop Amri, Maassen said that although officers had watched the Tunisian over a long period of time, they found no evidence to arrest him.“I believe that the security forces, in particular the police, have done everything in their power to assess the danger posed by Amri. But it is also clear that we live under the rule of law, and the legal framework must be respected,” he said.Amri, 24, who was shot dead by Italian police days after ramming a truck into a crowded Christmas market, had been under surveillance since March. But German police dropped their watch in September thinking he was a small-time drug dealer.Public anger also mounted as the rejected asylum seeker and known radical Islamist should have been deported long ago.In the wake of the attack, Chancellor Angela Merkel admitted that “the Amri case raises questions” and ordered a sweeping review of Germany’s security apparatus.last_img read more

Turks seek alternative media as news landscape shrinks

first_imgA journalist and guest take part in an internet broadcast in a studio at the headquarters of Turkish alternative media organisation Medyascope on 16 May 2018, in Istanbul. It’s not an obvious location for a media organisation. A gritty area dominated by car repair workshops in the backstreets of Istanbul. There’s no sign outside — just a photocopied sheet of paper pinned to the door requesting silence: “Broadcast in Progress”.Welcome to the headquarters of Turkish broadcaster Medyascope, an almost three-year-old alternative voice in an increasingly constricted media landscape in Turkey and an example of what new media can offer even in tough circumstances. The door swings open to reveal a surprisingly standard television studio with a desk and coloured background. A team of young editors are glued to their laptops around a large table, whispering excitedly, preparing the next broadcast.Medyascope, which was founded in 2015 by leading Turkish journalist Rusen Cakir, does not broadcast through satellite let alone terrestrial TV, but rather via new media like Facebook, YouTube and Periscope.Every weekday it presents several hours of live debate from voices across the political spectrum with a freedom increasingly absent from the major news channels in Turkey under the rule of president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.’No other channels left’ Awarded the Free Media Pioneer Award by the International Press Institute (IPI) in 2016, its importance has grown as ownership changes and increasingly adverse conditions for reporters have limited the media spectrum, encouraging prominent Turkish journalists to join the channel and frustrated viewers to watch it.And with Turkey heading for presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24 at a time when journalists complain of a lack of pluralism in traditional media dominated by coverage of Erdogan, its voice is ever more important.”There are no other channels left in Turkey, where journalists like myself, with a mainstream media background, could work today,” said presenter Isin Elicin, formerly a prominent anchor on the NTV news channel.”The mainstream media are not broadcasting news in the way that people need to be informed. They look for sources that do alternative but independent, objective journalism. And they find us,” she said.Elicin, once a familiar face on mainstream Turkish TV, insisted it was essential that alternative media did not become identified as pro-opposition.”The main goal of Medyascope is to do journalism. It’s not the journalists’ job to do opposition. It’s our guests who make the comments,” she said.’Extending government grip’ Just ahead of the snap elections announcement, Turkey’s media world was struck in April by the thunderbolt-like announcement that the largest media group, Dogan Media Group, was being sold by Dogan Holding to its rival, Demiroren Group. The Dogan Media Group owns some of the country’s biggest media brands like the Hurriyet daily and CNN Turk news channel. While not seen as outright opposition media, they were regarded as bastions of independent journalism. But analysts have seen the takeover as a clear attempt by the government to exercise control over these media. Demiroren Group’s chairman Erdogan Demiroren is considered close to the president, while his son, Yildirim, runs the Turkish Football Federation. With the sale approved by Turkey’s competition authority, the changes have come fast at Hurriyet and CNN Turk, which have seen an exodus of talent, with prominent CNN Turk anchor Ahu Ozyurt the latest to go.In an op-ed in Hurriyet, Erdogan Demiroren appeared to indicate change was needed, saying media should “stay away from destructiveness and return to its stance of constructive criticism.”Marc Pierini, a visiting scholar at Carnegie Europe, said increasing control over the media was one of several instruments used by the government to ensure victory in the elections seen as a watershed for Turkey.”Favourable sales of media groups to government-friendly businesses is extending the government’s grip on the press,” he said. The furore over the acquisition of Dogan Media is nothing new.The Milliyet and Vatan dailies had already been sold to Demiroren by Dogan in 2011, while the Sabah daily, once an independently-minded newspaper, is now an unashamedly pro-government title following ownership changes in 2007. ‘Emerged out of a necessity’ Some independent titles do remain, such as the anti-Erdogan Cumhuriyet and the leftist BirGun. But the price can be high and 13 staff of Cumhuriyet were convicted on terror offences in April although they remain free pending appeal. In a sign of the thirst for news from such sources, top Turkish journalists have amassed colossal numbers of social media followers who enjoy their sometimes piquant views — the popular host of Fox TV’s evening news show, Fatih Portakal, has more than 5.95 million Twitter followers. While private and state networks tend to broadcast every word of Erdogan’s speeches from greetings to farewells, those of main opposition candidate Muharrem Ince are usually cut, while opposition nationalist Meral Aksener is barely shown at all.Burak Tatari, another anchor at Medyascope and formerly of weekly magazine Tempo, said that audiences in Turkey were failing to find access to the information they needed in mainstream media, with interview subjects and material filtered. He said that the main limit on Medyascope’s growth was financing, with advertising difficult to attract and the bulk of its revenues coming from grants from international foundations.”Medyascope has emerged out of a necessity,” he said. “We are trying to do here what the mainstream media should do.”last_img read more
