Happy Diva chasing Paddy Power Gold Cup double | Racing News

first_img“At the weights we probably can’t win but we’ve got to have a go at it, her prep run brought her on and we’re 100 per cent happy that she’ll run her best race, whether that is good enough we’ll find out.“This will probably her her last handicap – mares’ races like the one at Doncaster at Christmas, where she just got beat by Lady Buttons, and the new one at the Festival are probably what we’re looking at.”Simply The Betts has taken to chasing with real aplomb, winning four of his five starts last season, culminating in his win in March.- Advertisement – Happy Diva aims to become the first back-to-back winner of the Paddy Power Gold Cup since Bradbury Star when the Kerry Lee-trained mare lines up at Cheltenham on Saturday. While Cyfor Malta did win the famous handicap twice after Josh Gifford’s top-class performer, his victories came four years apart.- Advertisement – That was a breakthrough at the big meeting for trainer Harry Whittington, who has been delighted with his preparation for this.“We were thinking about the Old Roan or the Paddy Power in the summer and the same owners have got Itchy Feet, so it makes sense for him to be going back to Cheltenham,” said Whittington.“He’s two from two, he loves the track, he thrives (there). I think that’s a huge advantage.“He’s fresh, he’s incredibly well. He’s done plenty of work because he started off when he came in in June.“His work has been sparkling, we’re very happy with him and he’s won fresh every season so we’re really looking forward to running him.”Happy Diva was the beneficiary of a late fall by Slate House last year with Colin Tizzard’s charge, who was a novice at the time, slipping up two out.He later went on to win a Grade One at Kempton and assistant trainer Joe Tizzard feels he is back in top form.He said: “He has not had a prep run before the race this year, but he goes well fresh. He likes the track and it seems like a nice target for him.“It looked like he was cruising in last year’s race until he fell, but it was just one of those things. As his season went on he improved like we hoped he would although the Cheltenham Festival never really worked out for him.“He is quite a bit higher in the weights this year, but we still feel it is the right race for him.“If you forget his Cheltenham Festival run he has always run pretty well round Cheltenham. He goes well fresh and runs well at this time of year.”The Tizzards also saddle one of the outsiders, The Russian Doyen, but he could outrun his odds.Tizzard said: “He got injured at Aintree and that was it for last season, but the season before he finished fourth in the Listed novice handicap chase at the Cheltenham Festival where he was the best of the English-trained runners.“He could be a slightly forgotten horse and had a nice prep run over hurdles at Fontwell. I think he has got a great each-way chance.”The ante-post favourite for a long time was Paul Nicholls’ Saint Sonnet, before he was joined at the head of the betting by Mister Fisher and Simply The Betts.Nicholls told Betfair of his French import: “We freshened him up before he won a little race at Catterick at the end of February and he then ran an encouraging race in the Marsh Chase at the Festival. I’ve had the Paddy Power Gold in mind for him ever since.“Saint Sonnet has had a perfect preparation since coming back into training at the start of July, he should be very fit, and a mark of 147 is fair enough without being a gift.“I did plan to give him a pop over hurdles at Chepstow a month ago, but took him out because the ground was too quick. He is an improving five-year-old and I couldn’t be happier with him.”The Pipe family have a good record in this race and David Pipe hopes new recruit Siruh Du Lac can get involved at the finish on his first run since leaving Nick Williams.“Siruh Du Lac is in good form. He had a wind operation over the summer. He works well as you would expect from a 150-rated horse. He needs to step up his game to be involved in the finish, but he has been working well at home and we are very much looking forward to it,” said Pipe.“Siruh Du Lac has been to all the big occasions anyway. He usually races up towards the front of the field and touch wood is a good jumper.“He did fall at Cheltenham last time and you just think about whether horses remember that. He has jumped nicely at home and jumping is one of his strengths, so I think he was just unlucky last time.“The horses have been in good form and are running well. We of course have a history with the Paddy Power meeting, and it would be great to enjoy another good weekend at Cheltenham.”Nigel Twiston-Davies is another trainer with a good record in the race and feels the step up in trip could suit his Al Dancer. The William Hill ambassador said: “His win first time up this season at Newton Abbot was quite remarkable to be honest. The reason why I felt it was so good was because he settled so well, better than he ever had done before, and that could be the key to him.“He had to run over two miles before because he wouldn’t settle, but if he settles here then this trip might bring out the best in him. I think this extra distance should put him ahead of the handicapper.” – Advertisement – Happy Diva may turn 10 on New Year’s Day, but continued to improve throughout last season and was second at the Festival behind Simply The Betts, whom she meets on better terms this weekend. When it was put to her that Happy Diva would be attempting to emulate one of the greats of the National Hunt scene, Lee said: “She’s already one of the greats in our eyes!“I still maintain that her career-best effort was at the Festival last year, she just got chinned. She’s in great form going there, but we know she’s up against it as she’s up in the handicap (from last year).- Advertisement –last_img read more

Tottenham star Dele Alli gets Premier League suspension for social media post mocking coronavirus

first_imgThe excitement about the return to competition for the Premier League might be muted for Tottenham Hotspur fans after star midfielder Dele Alli received a one-game suspension for a SnapChat video he posted that was deemed “insulting” by the Football Association. The FA announced Thursday that Alli will be banned from the Spurs’ crucial June 19 game against Manchester United because of the video he posted that appeared to mock an Asian man and made light of the coronavirus, which became a pandemic that has killed more than 400,000 people worldwide. That apology was not enough to avoid punishment from the FA, which released a statement:“The Tottenham Hotspur FC player denied that a social media post breached FA Rule E3(1), as it was insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute, and constituted an ‘Aggravated Breach’, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin and/or nationality. However, it was subsequently found proven by an independent Regulatory Commission.”Alli subsequently responded in a statement that he was relieved to be cleared of the racism charge and reiterated his apology for the “poorly judged joke about a virus that has now affected us more than we could ever have imagined. I’m grateful that the FA has confirmed that my actions were not racist because I despise racism of any kind. We all need to be mindful of the words and actions we use and how they can be perceived by others.” He also must pay a fine of $63,220 and go through a training course.Alli has started 20 Premier League games for Tottenham in 2019-20, scoring eight goals and assisting on four others. He is one of England’s top midfielders and started four games as they reached the semifinals at the 2018 World Cup.MORE: What to know about Premier League’s returnHis absence from Tottenham’s first game back will be particularly punitive. Spurs stand eighth in the Premier League with 41 points, four behind fifth-place Manchester United. With Manchester City banned from European competition for two seasons — that penalty is under appeal — fifth place currently represents a Champions League berth. Spurs could close the gap to a single point, but will have to do it without one of their best players.Alli’s video showed him in an airport wearing a protective facemask, then cut to a shot of an Asian man before sweeping to a shot of a bottle of hand sanitizer. There, the caption appeared: “This virus gunna have to be quicker than that to catch me.” Alli told the FA, according to Football London, he filmed the man in the video because he was coughing. The video was posted in early February and then quickly removed. Alli posted an apology video the next day, in which he acknowledged the original video “wasn’t funny” and explained that’s why he deleted it.“But, yeah, I let myself down, and the club,” he said. “I don’t want you guys to have that impression of me because it wasn’t funny, and I realized that straight away and took it down. It isn’t something that should be joked about. I’m sending all my love and all my thoughts and prayers with everyone in China.”last_img read more

EA and Klei announce Shank 2 adds survival coop mode

first_imgLast year PSN, XBLA and Steam gamers got a treat in the form of the ultra-violent side-scrolling beat-em-up Shank from developer Klei Entertainment. If there’s a better looking game in the same genre we haven’t seen it yet, and now it is getting a sequel.EA Partners announced this week its intention to publish Shank 2. Klei has already spent a year developing the game, but this apparently isn’t just a sequel. Jamie Cheng, founder of Klei states on the official blog for Shank 2 that the team took on board all the feedback they got for the original and started fresh. So while this is going to be a true sequel, everything has been re-imagined to offer up “twice the fidelity and far more control over our favorite stabbing man.”The weapon system has been redesigned allowing for more variation in the enemy types you can take on. This includes new weapon combos and counter moves. The environments also look even better than the first game, and Klei has added a new layer of destruction with more explosions and environmental damage promised. As for new features, Shank 2 introduces a survival mode that can be played co-op with a friend either locally or online. It’s basically a brawl on a much larger scale to challenge both of you at once. There’s no word on a release date yet other than “early 2012,” but with a year of production already done I’m hoping for a January rather than March launch.More at the Shank 2 official blog, via Gamasutralast_img read more

Next Wave of Smartphone Giving Arrives in UK

first_imgShareTweetShareEmail0 SharesJanuary 22, 2015; Daily Mail and Information AgeThe future of “contactless giving” to your favorite nonprofit has now arrived in England. A British medical charity is partnering with Clear Channel Outdoor to allow donations to be made using smart phones and window displays. How does it work? Four window displays in the offices of Cancer Research UK (CRUK) are designed to allow persons to donate by simply touching their cellphone or credit card to the window. A radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip makes this possible by communicating with the display. (Credit cards in the USA don’t typically have these RFID chips.) After the money is donated, donors then receive access to a video showing how the money will be used to fight cancer.According to the Daily Mail, the concept—a world first, the charity says—“marks a welcome move away from ‘charity muggers’ or chuggers.” “Chuggers” is a slang term for the persons who are paid to stand in shopping areas and seek to sign up passers-by to pledge plans. There is a growing public backlash against such street solicitors. Recently, many charities have been searching for less aggressive ways to raise money. The CRUK display will be available 24 hours a day until February 13, which is World Cancer Day. CRUK’s director of innovation, Paul Clarke, said, “We also see this as a great opportunity to use our highly visible shops in 570 locations across the country as a new marketing channel, using interactive creativity that really engages with our supporters old and new.”—Jeanne AllenShareTweetShareEmail0 Shareslast_img read more
