Ed Reed was recently let go by the Houston Texans, but the free safety wasn’t unemployed for long. On Thursday, Reed officially joined the New York Jets.According to USA Today, “The New York Jets announced a contract agreement with Reed and expected to have the five-time all-pro and former defensive player of the year on the practice field today.”Reed and Jets head coach Rex Ryan worked together before while the two were part of the Baltimore Ravens organization.“Reed and Jets coach Rex Ryan overlapped for seven years with the Baltimore Ravens, who employed Ryan as their defensive coordinator before he took the big promotion in New York following the 2008 season.”Antonio Allen and Dawan Landry are the Jets’ current starters at safety and even though it’s well pass the halfway point in the season, Reed still has time to get in the lineup.“Reed theoretically has time to work his way into the lineup as part of New York’s nickel and dime packages — while getting his legs underneath him if need be — and could play more center field, especially given Allen’s effectiveness at covering tight ends.”In this season so far, Reed made only 16 tackles in seven games. The defensive veteran has appeared in nine Pro Bowls and was at one time the NFL’s active interception leader. However, this year Reed has failed to force a turnover or even defend a pass.Albeit, Reed still has value as an experience player with a Super Bowl win on his resume. He was fired on Wednesday and it took less than 24 hours to secure his latest job.
West Ham United goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski believes their new-found form is due to Manuel Pellegrini’s ability to change the squad’s mentalityAfter losing his four Premier League games, Pellegrin has since led West Ham to seven wins in their last 13 attempts. The good run of form has moved the Hammers up to ninth-place in the standings and Fabianski reckons Pellegrini’s footballing philosophy has now been embraced by the entire team.“We were a group that needed a bit of time to find the balance within the team, to find the right way and what suits us when it comes to playing – the shape, the tactics – and what suits the manager best when it comes to picking a team to perform,” Fabianski told the club website.Jose Mourinho is sold on Lampard succeeding at Chelsea Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho wanted to give his two cents on Frank Lampard’s odds as the new Chelsea FC manager, he thinks he will succeed. There really…“Since the first four games we lost, after that, I think we’ve been in pretty good form during this period and I think the manager knows more about us as a group and what to expect from every single player, and what suits him best to get the best out of the team.“It was tactics and the mentality of the group [that have developed] as well. We understood more what his demands are, especially on the mental side of the game, his approach and how he wants his team to behave on the pitch in different circumstances. We understood his ideas of being a team a lot better.”Pellegrini’s side will next host Watford at the London Stadium this Saturday, where they hope to extend their winning run to five matches.
The memo received by BNP Media staffers this week alerting them to 25 percent salary cuts for the foreseeable future includes a line that jumps off the page almost as much as that “25 percent” figure: “Minimum wage will be the floor for this reduction.”It’s a line that assures employees the company won’t be cutting below minimum wage (which of course, would be illegal), and only applies to those support positions that may be hovering around minimum wage after the 25 percent cuts. But still, are things so bad that we have to be assured now that salaries won’t be cut to minimum wage? Salary cuts usually start at the top and the Henderson family (who owns BNP) have taken theirs as well. However, an associate editor making $40,000 who is hit with a 25 percent salary cut is suddenly making $30,000. Forget trying to live on that in publishing capitals like New York City-that’s a tough hit anywhere (BNP is based near Detroit). As publishers continue to make cuts to keep their businesses alive, they need to be mindful of labor rules and regulations in their state, particularly with employees below a certain salary level. As Southern Breeze editor Mark Newman noted in FOLIO:’s March issue, many high level employees (particularly editors) need to “stop being figureheads and do some work.” But for those entry and associate level employees, for whom the historic trade-off has always been “low pay but great experience,” the returns are getting harder to justify. The company leaders who impose these cuts will need to balance their contribution margins against the eventual pushback: The unwillingness of their teams to tolerate major pay cuts even as they’re being asked to do significantly more work. It’s a dangerously narrow line to walk.
