Otto and Budweiser buys the world the first autonomous trucking round

first_imgTags:#Autonomous#Budweiser#featured#Otto#top#transport For Self-Driving Systems, Infrastructure and In… Amanda Razani IT Trends of the Future That Are Worth Paying A… Budweiser and Otto just achieved a major feat, completing the world’s first shipment by autonomous truck.Otto announced this accomplishment today by first stating, “We’re not ones to sit around idly. We are driven by an urgency to make our transportation network safer — and more efficient — for drivers and consumers alike.”See Also: Will autonomous vehicles cruise the factories of tomorrow? With complete support from the State of Colorado, Otto shipped 51, 744 cans of Budweiser from Fort Collins, through Denver, ending up in Colorado Springs.Although there was a professional driver in the sleeper berth at the back of the vehicle, monitoring how the vehicle ran, Otto’s system controlled the acceleration, braking, and steering of the truck to transport the beer exit-to-exit without any human intervention ever taking place during the 120-mile journey.  By using cameras, radar, and lidar sensors attached to the vehicle, the truck was able to “see” the road.Otto calls this the next stepThe truck maker said that “this shipment is the next step towards our vision for a safe and productive future across our highways. With an Otto-equipped vehicle, truck drivers will have the opportunity to rest during long stretches of highway while the truck continues to drive and make money for them.”Furthermore, Otto believes that this method of self driving shipments will be quite safe and cost effective, with the chances of collision or aggressive driving highly unlikely, and the use of fuel being much more precise.Having a similar vision, Budweiser was the perfect match for this historic achievement. Its trucks are well known in America, and its popular brand has made a real change for the better in safe driving and reducing carbon emissions.Otto ended with, “Our partnership with Anheuser-Busch is just beginning, and our companies are excited to transform commercial transportation together.”center_img Related Posts Break the Mold with Real-World Logistics AI and… 5 Ways IoT can Help to Reduce Automatic Vehicle…last_img read more

Take steps to help women in crisis: NGO to Goa govt.

first_imgPANAJI: Taking a cue from the recent case in which a woman was found confined to a room by her family for years, Bailancho Saad, a women’s collective which played a role in her rescue, has demanded measures such as expediting the formation of a one-stop crisis centre for women and child victims of violence and abuse. The case of Sunita Verlekar, who was locked in a room with the stench of urine, without clothes or electricity, and infested with mosquitoes, has brought to the fore the violation of human rights of women, said Sabina Martins of Bailancho Saad at a press conference on Sunday. Ms. Martins said Ms. Verlekar, who studied up to Class XII (commerce), was married, but was sent back to her maternal home. Family members said she was confined because her mental condition was not stable. A medical examination found her psychologically and physically stable to be admitted to the State-run shelter home of Provedoria, Public Assistance Department. She received ₹2,000 per month from the Dayanand Social Security Scheme in her bank account, which was being withdrawn. This aspect is under investigation, Ms. Martins said. Bailancho Saad has said the government should periodically check the living conditions of people who are termed mentally unstable. Ms. Martins said there should be a mechanism to check if the money from welfare schemes reaches beneficiaries. Ms. Martins also urged the government to expedite setting up the one-stop crisis centre and the State Resource Centre for Women, funds for both of which have been provided by the Central government.last_img read more

Gautam Gambhir reluctant to play West Indies tour: Sources

first_imgThe Indian skipper for the forthcoming ODI series against West Indies, Gautam Gambhir, is reluctant to play the tour. The designated captain for the Caribbean is apparently worried about aggravating the injury to his shoulder, senior sources in the BCCI have told Headlines Today. Gambhir has told the BCCI that he is worried about a four-month injury lay off if he goes to the West Indies, which would mean missing the crucial series in England.  The BCCI is now awaiting the results of the physio report before they make a decision on Gambhir’s availability for the tour. They have confirmed that if Gautam is found to be unfit, he will not be sent to the Carribean. India’s cricketing body is unhappy that Gambhir continued playing for Kolkata Knight Riders as the skipper in the fourth season of the Indian Premier League despite the injury to his shoulder. Gambhir has not been sure of the extent of his shoulder injury as he was yet to know the result of MRI scan done on Tuesday evening. Club vs country Gambhir’s decision to play for Kolkata Knight Riders and risk his Team India role, has stoked the club versus country debate. Former chief selector Kiran More feels the BCCI needs to set its house in order. “Why blame cricketers? The BCCI needs to a take a big call over the issue. It must look into rules and regulations,” More told Headlines Today. South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs said as a professional cricketer ‘needs to know the extent of his injury’. “It is an important duty of a cricketer,” Gibbs said, adding country should come before the club, as there is ‘prestige’ involved. While cricket analyst Charu Sharma believed ‘avenues and options’ may force a cricketer to prefer clubs to the national call, senior cricket journalist Gulu Ezekiel said, “The BCCI has opened a Pandora’s box. You have players who will play the ILP but not the international matches.” The BCCI has created a situation, where ‘the rest of the world has to deliver’ and not Indian players, because the IPL happens in India, Ezekiel added.advertisementlast_img read more

Cesar Millans Hints For A Happy Hound On Independence Day

first_imgCesar Millan gave some handy hints in the Huffington Post prior to Independence Day on how to keep your pets happy during fireworks and celebrations.“Whether it’s a huge show put on by a city or just the neighbors setting off firecrackers in the backyard, it can be a loud experience, and very frightening and stressful for our dogs. More runaway dogs are rounded up in the days after Independence Day than at any other time. Running away is just one possible result of a dog’s reaction to a sudden loud noise.“When a dog is not calm and balanced, it will react to a stimulus in one of three ways: fight, flight, or avoidance. It will attack, run away, or hide. “Flight” and “avoidance” may sound like the same thing, but they’re not, and the difference is important. A dog in flight will run away from everything, while a dog avoiding will go to a familiar, safe place, like under a bed or into its kennel.“All dogs react differently to the noise of fireworks. If you’re lucky (or have prepared your dog properly), then they’ll just ignore them. Barking at the sound is also a common reaction of the “fight” sort. Trying desperately to get out of the house by scratching at walls or doors or running around is flight, while disappearing into a safe “den” is avoidance.“The first thing to remember when your dog is in any unbalanced state is to withhold affection. This can be difficult to do, but it’s best for your dog in the long run. If you pick up or hold a dog that’s scared and try to pet and reassure them, this will not calm them down. All it does is tell them that you approve of their mental state at that time. Give affection to a frightened dog and you will teach your dog to be afraid of everything.“Ideally, you should prepare your dogs well ahead of time for the loud noises of fireworks by gradually desensitizing them — playing the noises of fireworks while distracting them, for example. If you haven’t had a chance to do this, then there’s still time between now and the Fourth to get ready. Here are some things you can do:1. Relocate
If your dog does react badly to fireworks, try to arrange to keep her in a place where there won’t be any loud displays, such as at a friend’s or relative’s house, or at a professional dog boarding facility with which your dog is familiar. If the place is unfamiliar, try to take your dog there a few times before the holiday so it won’t be a big surprise when you leave her there on the day of.2. Exercise
If you can’t arrange for your dog to be elsewhere, then take him on a long walk before the festivities start in order to drain his energy, making him less likely to become excited when the fireworks go off. Your dog should be completely exhausted, leaving his brain tired enough that he won’t be able to concentrate on the noise.3. Disguise
No, this doesn’t involve putting a funny mask on your dog. Disguise the sound of fireworks by using dog-safe ear protection, like Mutt Muffs, which go over a dog’s ears like headphones. Note that you should never use any kind of plug that goes inside of a dog’s ear. Since the openings are so much larger and deeper than in human ears, it would be very easy to lose an earplug inside, leading to a trip to the vet. Blocking the noise, though, may help minimize reactions to it.4. Distract
When the fireworks go off, try engaging your dog in obedience behavior, having her do whatever tricks you’ve taught her for treats. If you have a treadmill, now is a great time to have your dog walk on it — the forward motion will re-direct her brain away from the fireworks and focus it on the physical action. Finally, scent is another great way to distract your dog by engaging her nose.5. Restrain
It can help to keep your dog on-leash, even indoors, during the fireworks — but especially if you have to be outdoors. This will give you control over him, and keep him from being able to run away if his reaction is flight. It is also very important that your dog wears proper I.D. at all times, as well as has a microchip, in case he does run away.6. Maintain
Remember, it is up to you to show calm, assertive leadership when the loud noises start. If you go about your business and don’t make a big deal about it, you’ll help your dog to understand that nothing terrible is going to happen. By not altering your routine, you help make the fireworks part of that routine for your dog.“Most of all, know your dog and know what to expect. If your dog is the type to try hiding from the noises, then have a kennel ready in advance so she has a safe place to run to. If your dog tends to get hyperactive or aggressive, then plan ahead with plenty of exercise.”To read more of Cesar’s hints, read his blog on HuffingtonPost.com.last_img read more
