BackType Now Filters Out Boring Tweets, Launches New WordPress Plugin

first_imgThe Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Conversations around blog posts now often happen offsite on social networks like Twitter and Facebook. Sadly, a lot of plugins that try to bring these conversation back to the blog end up being somewhat useless, as large numbers of retweets can easily overshadow the more interesting tweets. Twitter search engine BackType just launched a major update to its search engine and a new WordPress plugin that aim to combat this problem. Starting today, BackType will filter out uninteresting tweets from its search results and its widgets.Widgets and PluginsLast April, BackType released its first WordPress plugin. Unlike the original plugin, which features comments from sources like Twitter, Digg, FriendFeed,Reddit and other blogs, the new plugin only focuses on Twitter.Installing the plugin is straightforward. If you use WordPress, you can find the plugin and instructions for installing it here. If you use another blog engine, the widget can be found here. You don’t need to register with BackType to use this service. If nobody has tweeted anything interesting about your site yet, BackType will give your readers the option to send a tweet right from the widget. Sadly, BackType didn’t integrate a re-tweet feature into the plugin, which would have made the service even more useful for publishers. Here is the new BackType widget in action:BackType is obviously working in a crowded market. As a search engine, it has to compete with successful startups like OneRiot, while its plugin competes with more complete offerings from Disqus and JS-Kit. At the same time, though, the simplicity of the plugin is its greatest strength. If you don’t want to replace your current comment system but would like to bring in more discussions from Twitter to your blog, the new BackType plugin is definitely worth a look. Haryana Assembly elections: RPI to contest 10 seats, support BJP in 80

first_imgRepublican Party of India (RPI) chief Ramdas Athawale on Friday said that his party would contest 10 Assembly seats in Haryana and support the BJP on the other 80 seats.Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Mr. Athawale was here to review schemes pertaining to his Ministry.“In Haryana, we are not very strong but we want to contest at least 10 seats in the upcoming Assembly polls. We will be contesting against the Congress and by fielding our candidates, we will only be helping the BJP. Also, all our candidates who will win, would support the BJP government,” he told reporters.Calling Narendra Modi a “dashing” Prime Minister, Mr. Athawale said the decision to abrogate Article 370 was historic and one which Pakistan could not digest. “Pakistan has been unsuccessfully trying to rake up the Kashmir issue. It (Pakistan) should now hand over PoK to us as it would be in Pakistan’s interest.”There is complete peace in the Valley since the Article 370 decision, he said, adding “The decision would help remove all obstacles in the path of development in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Development will now speed up as many of the central schemes and laws, which earlier could not be enforced will now be implemented.”He said that the Union Territory status given to Jammu and Kashmir was only “temporary”. “Once the situation returns to full normalcy, statehood will be given to J&K,” he said.last_img read more

Newly-appointed ICC vice-president promises to end corruption from cricket

first_imgMoments after being appointed the vice president of the International Cricket Council (ICC ), AHM Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday made it clear that eradicating corruption in the gentleman’s game was one of his main aims in the near future.Initially, Kamal was set to be appointed during ICC’s Annual General Meeting in Kuala Lumpur in June, but his nomination was delayed and only the position of ICC president was filled, with Alan Isaac taking over from Sharad Pawar. In the wake of the recent controversy, where an Indian channel has exposed umpires’ willingness to fix games and pass vital information to bookies in exchange for money, Kamal said that no stone would be left unturned to ensure the game is not only played in the true spirit, but also adjudicated in an impartial manner. Speaking to Mail Today from Colombo, Kamal said: “The ICC maintains a zero-tolerance policy against corruption and now, with startling revelations about umpires too being involved in fixing, the noose has to be tightened further to ensure there is no scope to even think about crossing the line of fair play.”The ACSU (Anti-Corruption and Security Unit) of the ICC has been doing its best to ensure that fixing is wiped out from the system and every person involved with the game has been given strict instructions about what amounts to dishonesty and bringing the game to disrepute. I will personally join hands with them to ensure a corruption-free game.”Kamal further felt that if the umpires – often considered the ultimate authority on the field – have indeed stooped down to bribery and corruption, things will only get more difficult. He believes this needs to be nipped in the bud.”Players are sometimes lured because they are young and wish to live a flamboyant life way beyond their names. But if umpires too go that way, the situation worsens further. If the guardians of the game themselves falter, it sets a very negative example for the others. But first we need to investigate and see if they are guilty,” he said. Coming to his own appointment, Kamal said that it is a huge day not only for him, but also for Bangladesh cricket. “I am overwhelmed at being considered fit to hold such an important position. I feel this is not only an honour for me, but also Bangladesh cricket and the people of our country. It shows that we are taken just as seriously as the other top nations playing the game. I wish to bring repute to the nation through this appointment,” he said. Kamal also said that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is looking to finalise a fullfledged tour of India next year. Although India participated in the first Test Bangladesh ever played, the eastern neighbour has never toured India.”The BCB is in talks with its Indian counterpart to ensure that Bangladesh plays in India next year. We feel that Bangladesh has come to a level where they can provide enough of a fight to tough opponents like India. When Bangladesh held its maiden Test in Dhaka against India, it was more a case of making the game more popular in our country and also to earn revenue. But now it’s strictly a cricketing decision and we are looking to finalise things on Wednesday,” said the man who will now need to vacate his position as BCB president.advertisementlast_img read more

Crown disputes selfdefence argument at Calgary trial for man who strangled wife

first_imgCALGARY – The lawyer for a man who admits he strangled his wife and buried her body in their home says his client was acting in self-defence, but the Crown is arguing he made up stories of domestic abuse to avoid a murder conviction. The two sides made their closing arguments Thursday in the second-degree murder trial of Allan Shyback.Shyback, 40, is also charged with causing an indignity to the body of Lisa Mitchell, 31, who was last seen alive in Calgary in October 2012.An undercover “Mr. Big” sting operation was launched in 2013 and ended with Shyback’s confession and arrest in Winnipeg a year later.Defence lawyer Balfour Der said the onus of proof is on the prosecution and the accused must get the benefit of reasonable doubt.“Hearkening back to that quotation from that old English case about a thousand suspicious circumstances does not equal proof,” Der said in his address to Justice Rosemary Nation.“There has to be a solid anchorage from which this guilt would be found. In my respectful submission, it isn’t here.”On the stand this week, Shyback said he had been the victim of domestic abuse for nearly a decade. He said she had attacked him with a knife the day she was killed. He also admitted to placing her body in a Rubbermaid container and cementing it into the wall in the basement.“It’s gruesome,” Der said. “It’s a terrible thing to have done — to have taken this woman and folded her into a tub and cemented her the basement.”But Shyback also told court he didn’t try to kill his wife, loved her and was defending himself, Der pointed out.“That type of evidence should resonate with you and there should, at the very least, be reasonable doubt here, if not a finding that it is positively established that there was self-defence.”Prosecutor Jayme Williams said Shyback’s version of events appeared to be tailored to fit his story of abuse and noted he had told an undercover officer he was going to have to put a “good spin” on the facts to avoid a murder charge.Shyback’s account that he was trying to protect himself when Mitchell came at him with a knife was inconsistent and contradictory, Williams said.“It is lacking in details and … appeared in some ways that it may have been tailored to fit, at best, the description that he had given to the undercover officers and still make it look like it was an accident or was defending himself,” she said.Williams said Shyback’s testimony appeared geared at putting him in the best possible light.“He’s also extremely cautious to ensure that he looked like he was an abused spouse and an innocent victim rather than someone who was part of an aggressive, hostile relationship,” Williams said.“He is trying to make the description of what happened look best for him under the circumstances. There were only two people in the house that day and one of those people ended up buried in the basement so there’s only one that can tell us what happened.”In response, Der said the Crown did not prove its case.“The prosecution resorting to these type of arguments is desperation on their part and an inability to prove the case on the evidence. They need you to resort to baseless speculation, which you cannot.”Nation reserved her decision until May 18.— Follow @BillGraveland on Twitterlast_img read more
