But the defense has struggled at times, and one defensive position in particular has the Sooners a bit worried.Speaking to the media this past week per The Oklahoman, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch expressed some concern about the team’s secondary. In the interview, Grinch revealed that the team’s depth is “very, very thin” at those positions.“We’re very, very thin in the secondary, which is alarming, just from a depth standpoint,” Grinch said. “We’ve got some young guys coming in the fall we’re gonna have to plug in.“I’d probably echo that maybe across the board, probably a little bit more thin than we should be at Oklahoma, but that also is a great opportunity for guys to get reps.”While Oklahoma does have the benefit of having all of their defensive backfield starters from last year, the team only has one new face from the Class of 2019, four-star safety Jamal Morris.Oklahoma’s other three defensive backs that were recruited are not slated to arrive until later this year.Grinch made his bones coaching the secondary at programs across the country. He is in his first year at Oklahoma working as defensive coordinator and safeties coach after serving as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Ohio State last season. The Sooners’ scoring defense has been in the bottom half of the FBS since 2016, so the faster Grinch is able to bring the team up to speed, the better it bodes for them.[The Oklahoman]last_img read more
